An inquiry into the problematic of perjury, or lying, and forgiveness from one of the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century.
"One only ever asks forgiveness for what is unforgivable." From this contradiction begins Perjury and Pardon, a two-year series of seminars given by Jacques Derrida at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris in the late 1990s. In these sessions, Derrida focuses on the philosophical, ethical, juridical, and political stakes of the concept of responsibility. His primary goal is to develop what he calls a "problematic of lying" by studying diverse forms of betrayal: infidelity, denial, false testimony, perjury, unkept promises, desecration, sacrilege, and blasphemy.
Although forgiveness is a notion inherited from multiple traditions, the process of forgiveness eludes those traditions, disturbing the categories of knowledge, sense, history, and law that attempt to circumscribe it. Derrida insists on the unconditionality of forgiveness and shows how its complex temporality destabilizes all ideas of presence and even of subjecthood. For Derrida, forgiveness cannot be reduced to repentance, punishment, retribution, or salvation, and it is inseparable from, and haunted by, the notion of perjury. Through close readings of Kant, Kierkegaard, Shakespeare, Plato, Jankélévitch, Baudelaire, and Kafka, as well as biblical texts, Derrida explores diverse notions of the "evil" or malignancy of lying while developing a complex account of forgiveness across different traditions.

Jacques Derrida
Jacques Derrida (1930-2004) é o filósofo da Desconstrução – talvez o mais radical, justo e inventivo dos idiomas filosóficos: justíssimas nos parecem por isso as palavras que Dominique de Villepin lhe endereçou, a 25 de maio de 2003, na Universidade hebraica de Jerusalém, aquando da sua receção de um Doutoramento honoris causa: «Jacques Derrida, o senhor volta a dar densidade às palavras mais fortes e mais simples da Humanidade [...] O senhor está na primeira fila daqueles que abriram a via de um pensamento novo. [...] A "Desconstrução" é a démarche atenta, escrupulosa, de um pensamento que se forma à prova do seu objeto. Démarche eminentemente criativa e libertadora. Desfazer, sem nunca destruir, para ir mais longe. [...] O senhor situa-se na linha dos intelectuais da honra, ciosos de universal, no caminho aberto por Voltaire, Bernanos, Zola ou Sartre.»
Autor de uma obra imensa, para além da sua docência, primeiro na Sorbonne, de 1960 a 1964, depois na École Normale Supérieure de Paris, de 1964 a 1984, e na École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, de Paris, de 1984 a 2003, Derrida também desenvolveu uma intensa atividade docente um pouco por todo o mundo, tendo sido Professor convidado de várias universidades [nomeadamente, Berlim, San Sebastian, John Hopkins, Yale, Cornell, New York University, New School for Social Research, UC Irvine, Cardozo Scholl of Law, ...] e tendo também herdado a cátedra de Hans-Georg Gadamer na Universidade de Heidelberg. Doutor Honoris Causa por mais de duas dezenas de universidades, incluindo pela Universidade de Coimbra, em novembro de 2003.
