Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. There was a time in my own struggling for artistic existence, when I should have been so grateful for any practical teaching in orna ment, that I fancy there must be students who will find it helpful to have set plainly before them what I have had to puzzle out for myself. Hence this series of Text Books of Ornamental Design; in which I have amplified and illustrated the substance of a series of Cantor Lectures delivered in December last before the Society of Arts.
