A man of letters, art historian, antiquarian, and liberal politician, Horace Walpole (1717-1797) left us a vast literary work, most notably his correspondence, published posthumously in forty-eight volumes, and The Castle of Otranto (1764), recognized as the first Gothic novel, whose supernatural and mysterious elements inspired authors such as Bram Stoker, Ann Radcliffe, and Mary Shelley.
