ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Anton Tchékhov
Anton Tchékhov nasceu em Taganrog, no sul da Rússia, no dia 29 de janeiro de 1860, filho de um comerciante. A sua família mudou-se para Moscovo em 1876 devido à falência do pai, mas Anton permanece na sua cidade natal para terminar o liceu. Assim, só três anos mais tarde se juntou à família em Moscovo, onde se matricula na faculdade de Medicina. Para ajudar financeiramente a família, Tchékhov faz pequenos trabalhos jornalísticos e as primeiras tentativas literárias. Termina os estudos de Medicina em 1884 e começa a exercer nos arredores de Moscovo.
A sua primeira narrativa é publicada num jornal humorístico em 1880, desencadeando uma intensa colaboração de Anton com diversas publicações. Os seus primeiros textos dramáticos datam do final da década de 1880 ("Ivánov").
No ano de 1892 compra uma casa no campo, em Mélikhovo, para onde se muda com a família. Três anos mais tarde visita Tolstoi, cujas ideias irão exercer uma forte influência e um grande fascínio sobre Tchékhov.
Por motivos de doença, muda-se para Ialta, em Crimée. É no final da sua vida que escreve as três peças que o consagram como grande dramaturgo: "A Gaivota" em 1896, "As Três Irmãs" em 1900 e "O Cerejal" em 1903. Em 1904 parte para a Alemanha com a atriz Olga Knipper, com quem casara em 1901, morrendo no mês de julho em Badenweiler, na Floresta Negra. Hoje é reconhecido como um dos maiores escritores russos.
