Nelson Richard DeMille was born in New York on August 23, 1943. He then moved with his parents to Long Island. He attended Elmont Memorial High School, where he played football and track and field. He spent three years at Hofstra University. He later joined the Army, where he was an infantry lieutenant, and spent a year in Vietnam as a platoon leader in the First Cavalary Division. He was awarded the Vietnam Air Medal, Bronze Star and Cross of Valor.
After his discharge, DeMille returned to Hofstra University, where he majored in political science and history. He has three children, Lauren, Alexander, and James, and lives on Long Island.
He is a member of American Mensa, The Authors Guild , and past president of the Mystery Writers of America. He is also a member of the International Thriller Writers and was chosen as ThrillerMaster of the Year 2015.
He holds three honorary doctorates: in Letters from Hofstra University and Dowling College and in Literature from Long Island University.
