Johnston McCulley

Zorro's name and image are known worldwide, ever since the character's debut in... The All-Story Weekly, a popular weekly magazine. Zorro was born from the busy typewriter of Johnston McCulley.
McCulley was born in 1883 in Ottawa, Illinois, in the United States and was raised in the neighboring town of Chillicote. He began his writing career as a police reporter and became a prolific author of fiction.
He contributed to popular magazines of the time such as Argosy, Western Story Magazine, Detective Story Magazineand Blue BookHis novels were frequently reprinted. He wrote screenplays for film and television.
Inspired by the success of Zorro, McCulley developed several novels set in Spanish California. Magazines such Argosy They often referred to them as "Zorro-land" stories!
Among its other characters are The Crimson Clown, Thubway Tham, The Thunderboltand The Green Ghost.
McCulley died on November 23, 1958, in Los Angeles, California.
