ABOUT THE AUTHOR
John Cheever
John Cheever nasceu em 1912 no Massachusetts e morreu em 1982 em Nova Iorque. Considerado um dos maiores escritores americanos do século XX, viu a sua obra reconhecida com a atribuição da Medalha Howells da Academia Nacional Americana de Artes e Letras em 1965. É conhecido sobretudo pelos seus contos, quase todos inicialmente publicados na revista The New Yorker.
O livro que agora se publica constitui o segundo dos dois volumes em português dos contos completos reunidos na antologia The Stories of John Cheever, publicada em 1978, que nesse mesmo ano recebeu o Prémio Pulitzer de ficção, o Prémio Nacional do Círculo de Críticos e o Prémio Americano do Livro desse ano. Considerado por John Updike como o melhor estilista da sua geração, elogiado por Saul Bellow e Vladimir Nabokov, John Cheever inscreve-se na linha de escritores como Sherwood Anderson, J. D. Salinger e Raymond Carver.
