ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Mary MacLane
Mary MacLane nasceu em 1 ou 2 de maio de 1881, em Winnipeg, no Canadá, foi uma pioneira escritora feminista cujo relato autobiográfico franco, escrito aos 19 anos e publicado em 1902, se tornou um best-seller instantâneo.
Filha de pais presbiterianos escoceses e canadianos, era uma de quatro filhos. O seu pai, James, trabalhava como agente do governo canadiano, investindo em rebanhos de gado e barcos a remos.
Quando Mary tinha 4 anos, a família mudou-se para Fergus Falls, no Minnesota. Pouco depois da morte do pai, em 1889, a família foi para o Montana e, por fim, para Butte, então uma próspera cidade mineradora de cobre, onde a mãe se casou com um «fotógrafo errante».
Conhecida como a «mulher selvagem de Butte», MacLane adotou um estilo confessional modernista para expressar os seus desejos eróticos e as suas francas e ousadas reflexões acerca da amizade e dela mesma. Após duas décadas de estrelato, em que participou no desfile do 4 de Julho, teve MacLane Clubs e era exemplo para as jovens rebeldes, foi praticamente esquecida.
Enfant terrible da literatura americana, em 6 de agosto de 1929, Mary MacLane foi encontrada morta num albergue em Chicago.
Escritores como Hemingway, Crane, Stein e Fitzgerald afirmaram que MacLane foi uma influência importante na sua busca por um novo estilo americano.
