Thomas Merton (1915-1968) is perhaps the most influential American Catholic author of the 20th century. After an exuberant youth, Merton graduated in English from Columbia University before entering Gethsemani Abbey, of the Trappist Cistercian Order. He became very active in this field, which earned him violent criticism from both Catholics and non-Catholics. At the end of his life, he dedicated himself to promoting the encounter between Western and Eastern religions.
