ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Stanislaw Lem

Stanislaw Lem (1921-2006) is one of the most translated and prominent Polish authors. In the 1940s, he studied medicine and psychology in Lviv and Krakow. He was forced to obtain false documents – which saved him from Belzec's gas chambers – and, as a mechanic, dedicated himself to sabotaging German cars during the Nazi invasion. He published... Solaris (1961), The Owner's Voice (1968) and books with inimitable humor, such as Memories Found in a Bathtub (1961) and Futurological Congress (1971). In 1976, he was expelled from the American Science Fiction Writers Association for criticizing the quality of American production in the genre. He left us a profoundly philosophical body of work, guided by reflection on human limitations, the dark side of progress, and man's place in the Universe. He will endure on this planet as a master of satire and imagination.
