ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Miguel Torga

Pseudonym of Adolfo Correia da Rocha, author of a vast literary production, widely recognized and translated into several languages. He was born in S. Martinho de Anta in 1907. After an experience of emigration to Brazil during his adolescence, he studied Medicine in Coimbra, where he lived and where he died in 1995. He was a Presença poet in his early phase; his work addressed social themes such as justice and freedom, love, the anguish of death, and revealed an intimate and permanent alliance between man and the land. He debuted with... Anxiety, standing out in the field of poetry with Rebel Orpheus, Song of Man, as well as through many poems scattered throughout the sixteen volumes of his DailyIn works of fiction, we distinguish... The Creation of the World, Animals, New Tales from the Mountain, between others. The Diary It occupies a prominent place in his work. Also as a playwright, he published three works entitled... Dry Land, Sea and ParadiseHe received, among others, the Montaigne Prize in 1981, the Camões Prize in 1989 and the Literary Life Award (awarded by the Portuguese Writers' Association) in 1992.
