ALsf

Interessante conhecer a história deste ícone.

Rocket Man

Carla Rodrigues

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Elton John

Elton John is one of pop music's most enduring and iconic legends, known as much for his unmistakable voice as for his extraordinary talent as a pianist and songwriter. Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25, 1947 in Pinner, Middlesex, England, Elton John has become one of music's most influential figures, with a career spanning more than five decades and including countless generation-defining hits.

Elton John began his musical career in the 1960s, initially as a member of several bands and then as a successful songwriter, writing songs for other artists in partnership with lyricist Bernie Taupin. The partnership with Taupin, which began in 1967, proved to be one of the most prolific and successful in the history of pop music. Together, Elton and Bernie have created some of the most memorable and beloved songs of all time.

Elton John's success as a solo artist began in 1970 with the release of his second album, Elton John, which included the single "Your Song." This ballad quickly became a worldwide hit and established Elton as an emerging star. "Your Song" remains one of his most iconic songs, and the album kicked off a series of releases that would define 1970s pop and rock music.

In the following years, Elton John released a series of hugely successful albums, including Tumbleweed Connection (1970), Madman Across the Water (1971), Honky Château (1972) – which included the hit "Rocket Man" – and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973), often considered his magnum opus. This latest album, one of the most famous double albums in music history, included hits such as "Bennie and the Jets," "Candle in the Wind," and the title track "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road." The album was a commercial and critical success, cementing Elton John as a global superstar.

Elton John not only dominated the charts with his albums, but also with his live concerts, which have become legendary for their energy, their extravagant costumes and their ability to captivate audiences around the world. His exuberant personality, combined with his musical talent, made him a figure adored by audiences and critics alike.

Throughout the 1970s, Elton continued to release albums that were commercial and critical successes, including Caribou (1974), Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy (1975) – the first album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 – and Rock of the Westies (1975). He also wrote the music for The Who's musical Tommy, and its success continued unabated until the end of the decade.

However, like many rock stars of his generation, Elton John faced personal challenges, including problems with addictions. Despite these challenges, he maintained an incredibly productive career, and into the 1980s, he continued to release successful albums, albeit with a more pop-sounding sound. Hits like "I'm Still Standing," "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues," and "Nikita" kept him relevant on the music charts and on the radio.

In the 1990s, Elton John entered a new phase of his career. He was asked to write the soundtrack for Disney's 1994 film The Lion King, which included the song "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," which earned him an Academy Award for Best Original Song. The soundtrack was a huge success and introduced Elton John's music to a new generation of fans.

In 1997, after the tragic death of Princess Diana, Elton John re-recorded "Candle in the Wind" in her honor. The 1997 version of "Candle in the Wind" became the best-selling single of all time, with over 33 million copies sold worldwide, and is widely considered one of the most emotional and iconic songs of his career.

Over the next few decades, Elton John continued to release new albums and tour internationally, while remaining a constant presence on the global music scene. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1998 for his services to music and charity.

Elton John is also known for his philanthropic work, particularly in the fight against HIV/AIDS. In 1992, he founded the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which has grown into one of the largest non-profit organizations dedicated to HIV prevention and support for people affected by the disease.

In 2019, the biopic Rocketman was released, which tells the story of Elton John's life, from his early days as a musical prodigy to becoming a world superstar. The film was widely acclaimed and won several awards, including the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "(I'm going to) Love Me Again," written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin.

Elton John has announced his farewell tour, Farewell Yellow Brick Road, which began in 2018 and is expected to end in 2023, marking the end of his live tours. However, he continues to record music and maintain an active presence in pop culture.

With over 300 million records sold worldwide, numerous awards and recognitions, and a career that has defined pop and rock music for generations, Elton John is undoubtedly one of the greatest music legends of all time. His ability to reinvent himself and create music that resonates with audiences of all ages has earned him a permanent place in music history.
