ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Hugh Lofting

Hugh John Lofting, born January 14, 1886, was an Anglo-American writer, trained in Civil Engineering, who created a classic character in children's literature, Doctor Dolittle. The doctor who talked to animals and lived in an English village first appeared in illustrated letters that Lofting sent to his children from the trenches of the British Army during World War I. After the end of the war and before the publication of his first book, Lofting took up residence in the United States. He died on September 26, 1947.
