Samuel Johnson

Samuel Johnson nasceu a 18 de setembro de 1709, em Lichfield, no Staffordshire, e é unanimemente considerado um dos maiores autores da prosa de língua inglesa. Distribuída por ensaio, crónica, poesia, biografia, lexicografia e crítica literária, a obra de Samuel Johnson atravessa todos os géneros sem perder a elegância, o espírito critico, a erudição e o compromisso com a literatura. Pioneiro do jornalismo literário, escreveu para as revistas The Gentleman’s Magazine, The Rambler e The Idler, além de ter preparado – ao longo de nove anos – um pioneiro dicionário da língua inglesa (1755). The Vanity of Human Wishes, o seu livro de poesia mais conhecido, foi publicado em 1749; durante a década seguinte, ocupou-se também da obra de Shakespeare, que organizou e prefaciou (1765) antes de, em 1779, ter iniciado a publicação do seu monumental Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets, e de, em 1775, ter sido impresso o seu relato A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland, viagem que realizou na companhia de James Boswell (1740-1795), a quem devemos a extensa e riquíssima biografia, Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D., publicada em 1791. Johnson morreu em Londres, a 13 de dezembro 1784, e foi sepultado na abadia de Westminster.
