James Fenimore Cooper was an American writer of the first half of the nineteenth century. His work is as varied as it is abundant. Cooper lived much of his childhood and the last fifteen years of his life in Cooperstone, the town created by his father on the property he owned. One of his most famous novels is The Last of the Mohicans, considered by many to be his masterpiece.
