Newton's monumental work, "Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica," published in 1687, represents the pinnacle of his scientific endeavors and stands as one of the most significant classics in the history of human science. This classic consists of three volumes. The first volume begins by defining inertia, momentum, and force, followed by the statement of three laws of motion-commonly known as Newton's laws of motion. Newton then discusses some theorems of calculus, presented in a classical geometric manner incorporating the concept of limits. After introducing these new mathematical tools, Newton proceeds to discuss the mutual derivation between inverse-square centripetal force and Kepler's laws of planetary motion, the properties of ellipses and elliptical motion, the geometric properties of various cycloids, the motion resulting from the gravitational attraction between two bodies, the gravitational attraction of a sphere to a particle, and the motion of three bodies, among other topics. The second volume discusses motion under resistance, marking the beginning of fluid mechanics. The third volume applies the mathematical results from the first volume to natural phenomena. Using this theoretical approach, Newton obtains numerous results that can explain many natural phenomena, such as tides, irregular motion of the moon, and precession, among others. Some of these results predict future phenomena, such as artificial satellites.
