ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Monteiro Lobato

Monteiro Lobato (São Paulo, 1882-1948) is considered one of the most important and original authors of Brazilian children's literature and remained for decades as a reference in the imagination of children and young people. His fables and tales have traces of fantastic literature along with elements of traditional Brazilian folklore. Founder of Editora Monteiro Lobato, and later of Companhia Editora Nacional, he was also a translator, journalist, businessman and lawyer. Among his best-known children's works are O Saci (1921), Reinações de Narizinho (1931), Histórias da Tia Nastácia (1937) and Serões de Dona Benta (1937). From Reinações de Narizinho, a long work and sometimes published separately between its different chapters, the famous television series Sítio do Picapau Amarelo was born, with great success on both sides of the Atlantic and marking several generations of viewers. The Monteiro Lobato Prize for Literature for Children and Youth was created in 2017, in his honor, in a partnership between the governments of Portugal and Brazil.
