SYNOPSIS
Walter Benjamin, one of the foremost cultural commentators and theorists of this century, is perhaps best known for his analyses of the work of art in the modern age and the philosophy of history. Yet it was through his study of the social and cultural history of the late nineteenth-century Paris, examined particularly in relation to the figure of the great Parisian lyric poet Charles Baudelaire, that Benjamin tested and enriched some of his core concepts and themes. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Walter Benjamin
Walter Benjamin nasceu em Berlim em 1892, no seio de uma família judaica. Estudou Filosofia em Berlim, Munique e Freiburg e doutorou-se em Berna (Suíça) no ano de 1919, com a tese A Crítica de Arte no Romantismo Alemão. A ascensão de Hitler e do nazismo obrigaram-no a fugir de Berlim, em 1933. Residiu sobretudo em Paris, com passagens por Itália e por Espanha. O medo de ser entregue à Gestapo e as dificuldades em passar a fronteira entre França e Espanha conduziram-no ao suicídio em 1940. Como legado deixou-nos uma obra filosófica de uma impressionante atualidade, onde se cruzam os assuntos que tentava compreender e estudar: História, Modernidade, Arte, Tecnologia, literatura dos séculos XIX e XX e a ascensão da cultura de massas, assim como numerosas traduções e análises literárias a Baudelaire, Brecht, Hölderlin, Kafka e Proust.
