Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. Three peculiarities of this book perhaps need explanation. First, natural selection is constantly emphasized, while other equally important factors are made subordinate, although great care is taken to mention them; second, only a few of the hundreds of fine examples afforded by history are here treated; and third, much space is devoted to a somewhat speculative account of man's early evolution and migrations.
