Flann O'Brien
Flann O’Brien (1911-1966) é um dos muitos pseudónimos de Brian O’Nolan. Funcionário público, colunista mordaz no Irish Times (sob o pseudónimo Myles na Gopaleen) e um dos mais notáveis escritores que a Irlanda deu à literatura mundial, apenas comparável a James Joyce ou Samuel Beckett. O’Brien publicou o seu primeiro romance, At Swim-two-birds («Uma Caneca de Tinta Irlandesa», Cavalo de Ferro, 2013), em 1939, suscitando desde logo o mais vivo entusiasmo de James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, Graham Greene e Dylan Thomas, entre outros. Apesar da admiração devota dos seus pares, O’Brien foi em vida um escritor incompreendido pela crítica e desconhecido pela generalidade dos leitores: o seu segundo romance, O Terceiro Polícia (Cavalo de Ferro, 2015) foi recusado pelo seu editor e só seria publicado postumamente, em 1967. Um terceiro livro, The Poor Mouth, foi publicado em gaélico em 1941 e seria seguido, vinte anos mais tarde, por The Hard Life (1961) e The Dalkey Archive (1964). Nas décadas subsequentes à morte do autor, a reputação em torno do nome de O’Brien foi gradualmente crescendo entre a admiração devota dos seus pares e o consenso apaixonado da crítica e do publico-leitor, atingindo hoje em dia verdadeiras proporções de culto. A obra deste importante escritor encontrava-se inédita em Portugal.
