ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Gunnar Gunnarsson

Gunnar Gunnarsson (Valthjofsstadur, 1889 – Reykjavík, 1975) is one of the most important names in Icelandic literature. Author of an extensive body of work, including poetry, novels, and plays, which brought him international fame, he was repeatedly nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. His main works were written in Danish, including his celebrated five-volume fictional autobiography. Kirken paa bjerget [The Church on the Mountain] (1923-1928), Svartfugl [Blackbird] (1929) or Advent (1936), and later translated into Icelandic by the author himself, who returned to his homeland in 1939 to remain there until his death.
