Oliver Henry Porter, pseudonym of William Sidney Porter, was born on September 11, 1862, in Greensboro, North Carolina. After learning his first letters, he was admitted as a pharmacist's apprentice in his hometown pharmacy. Later, eager for new horizons, he left for Texas, where he lived with cattle ranchers. In Austin, years later, he became a bank employee, founding a magazine called "The Rolling Stone" during that time. At thirty-two, he began writing, but one day the bank went bankrupt and Oliver Henry received an arrest warrant. He escaped and, when he finally surrendered, spent several years in prison, gathering valuable material for his short story writing. Among his most notable works is "The Four Million". He died in New York in 1910.
