Germano Almeida was born on the island of Boa Vista in 1945.
He graduated in Law from the University of Lisbon. He lives in São Vicente where, since 1979, he has worked as a lawyer. He published his first stories in the magazine. Semicolon, signed with the pseudonym Romualdo Cruz. These stories were published in 1994 under the title The Fantastic Islandwhich, together with The Trago Family, 1998, recreate the childhood years and the social and family environment on the island of Boa Vista. But the first novel published by Germano Almeida was The Will of Mr. Napumoceno da Silva Araújo, in 1989, which marks the break with traditional Cape Verdean themes. My Poet, 1990, Stories from Inside the House, 1996, The Death of My Poet, 1998, The Memoirs of a Spirit, 2001, and The Sea in Lajinha, 2004, form what can be considered the Mindelo cycle of the author's work. The Day of the Rolled-Up Pants, 1992, and The Two Brothers, 1995, are based on real events that took place in the rural setting of Santo Antão and São Tiago. Stories Told, 1998, Dona Pura and the Comrades of April, 1999, the most mischievous of his novels, A Journey Through the History of the Islands, 2003, Eve, 2006, The Death of the Magistrate, 2010, From Mount Cara You Can See the World, 2014, Return to Paradise, 2015, The Faithful Departed, 2018, The Last Moo, 2020, Confession and Guilt, 2021, The Misfortunes of a Governor in the Tropics, 2023, and Crime in the Currents of Writing, 2025, complete the work published by Germano Almeida to date.
His works have been published in Brazil, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Cuba, the United States, Bulgaria, and Switzerland.
