The author also accords to the treatment of other slaves; he witnessed in those 12 years. It is a heart-wrenching story and one of the best classics I've ever read. Twelve Years a Slave is an 1853 memoir and slave narrative by American Solomon Northup as told to and edited by David Wilson. Northup, a black man who was born free in New York state, details his being tricked to go to Washington, D.C., where he was kidnapped and sold into slavery in the Deep South.

Solomon Northup

Solomon Northup nasceu em julho de 1808, um afroamericano descendente de escravos, nascido e criado como um homem livre, em Saratoga Springs, Nova Iorque. Foi sequestrado e mantido em cativeiro como escravo durante doze anos. Findo esse tempo, foi libertado. Além do livro que escreveu a relatar a sua experiência ao longo dos anos em que esteve preso, deu também dezenas de palestras, nos Estados Unidos, sobre as suas vivências enquanto escravo, a fim de apoiar a causa abolicionista. As circunstâncias e a data da morte de Northup são incertas. No entanto, e apesar dos muitos rumores a respeito do seu destino, suspeita-se que tenha morrido no ano de 1863.
