Yuri Felshtinsky nasceu em Moscovo, em 1956. Em 1974, iniciou os estudos em História no Instituto Pedagógico Estatal de Moscovo. Em 1978, emigrou para os Estados Unidos da América e prosseguiu os estudos em História, primeiro na Universidade Brandeis e mais tarde em Rutgers, onde obteve o doutoramento em História.
