Xxxtentacion
XXXTentacion, born Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy in 1998 in Florida, was one of the most striking and controversial figures in urban music in the late 2010s. He grew up in unstable environments, alternating between family homes and juvenile institutions, soon finding in music a way to express his inner turmoil.
His rise began on SoundCloud, a platform where he released raw, distorted, and emotionally intense tracks that quickly caught the attention of a generation seeking authenticity. The single "Look at Me!" (2017) went viral, catapulting him to the center of the so-called SoundCloud rap scene, a movement marked by lo-fi production, aggressive energy, and lyrical vulnerability.
His debut album, 17 (2017), showcased a more introspective side, exploring depression, loneliness, and emotional fragility in contrast to his initial aggression. This was followed by ? (2018), which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, solidifying XXXTentacion as one of the most influential voices of his generation. Songs like "Sad!" and "Moonlight" became anthems for millions of young people who identified with the confessional tone of his lyrics.
At the same time, his career was marked by serious controversies: lawsuits, accusations of violence, and episodes of erratic behavior fueled intense debates about the relationship between personal life and artistic work. This duality—between artistic vulnerability and violence offstage—made XXXTentacion a polarizing figure.
In June 2018, at just 20 years old, he was murdered in an armed robbery, becoming a tragic symbol of interrupted potential. His death did not diminish his influence: posthumous projects like Skins (2018) and Bad Vibes Forever (2019) kept his music alive, while his impact continues to be felt both in the sound of contemporary hip hop and in the imagination of fans who saw in him a generational voice.
XXXTentacion left a brief but profound legacy, marked by intensity, vulnerability, and controversy. His work remains a raw reflection of the pain and contradictions of a youth searching for identity in a fragmented world.
