Will Eisner, que faleceu a 3 de janeiro de 2005, «possuía uma espantosa compreensão da condição humana e a alma de um verdadeiro lutador», segundo afirmou Paul E. Fitzgerald do Washington Post. Nascido em Nova Iorque em 1917, Eisner foi um dos grandes pioneiros da arte gráfica do século XX. Criador da lendária série de BD The Spirit, Eisner lançou o género da graphic novel com a publicação do seminal Contract With God, em 1978. Os mais importantes prémios anuais da indústria da banda desenhada receberam o nome de «The Eisners» em sua honra.
