Nascida, em 1957, numa pequena cidade do sul da China (Nanning), Wei-Wei foi enviada, aos 17 anos, para o campo, na sequência da Revolução Cultural. Foi professora de francês, tendo estudado literatura francesa em Paris, entre 1986 e 1989. Vive actualmente em Inglaterra. A Cor da Felicidade, escrito originalmente em francês, é o seu primeiro romance. Seguiu-se As Flores da China, também traduzido para português pela Casa das letras.
