Vitorino Magalhães Godinho (1918-2011) foi um dos pioneiros das ciências sociais em Portugal. O seu espírito crítico, a sua atitude problematizadora e a sua capacidade de elaboração teórica tornaram-se referência para uma fusão aprofundada entre historiografia e sociologia, sendo porventura o académico português que melhor representa a corrente que associa as duas áreas do saber. Magalhães Godinho ganhou o grande prémio da Academia Francesa com A Economia do Império Português.
