Virgílio Azevedo é economista e jornalista de Ciência e Ambiente. Licenciado em Economia pelo Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão (ISEG) da Universidade de Lisboa, foi jornalista do Expresso entre 1982 e 2019, tendo depois continuado como colaborador permanente, apesar de estar reformado desde 2021. Foi redator principal, jornalista de Ciência e Ambiente, editor de Assuntos Europeus, editor dos cadernos «Economia» e «XXI» (sobre ciência e tecnologia), tendo sido um dos fundadores da revista de ciência e tecnologia Futuro. Foi distinguido com o Prémio Gazeta de Imprensa 2018 do Clube de Jornalistas, o prémio de jornalismo mais importante em Portugal.
