Valerio Massimo Manfredi (1943) é arqueólogo, investigador e topógrafo do Mundo Antigo. Atualmente a lecionar na Universidade de Bolonha, tem publicado inúmeros artigos académicos e várias obras de ficção, de entre as quais se destaca a famosa trilogia sobre a vida de Alexandre, o Grande, cujos direitos foram vendidos para 38 países e que deu origem a um filme da Universal Pictures. A sua obra já vendeu mais de seis milhões de exemplares em todo o mundo.
No catálogo da Porto Editora figuram já os seus romances O Exército Perdido (2009), que obteve o Prémio Bancarella 2008, e Idos de Março (2011).
