Edward Powys Mathers (1892-1939), que assinou o livro A Mandíbula de Caim sob o pseudónimo Torquemada, foi poeta, tradutor e um pioneiro na compilação de palavras cruzadas crípticas. Nascido em Londres, estudou no Trinity College e distinguiu-se pelas traduções de As Mil e Uma Noites e do poema Black Marigolds. Em 1924 introduziu em Inglaterra as palavras cruzadas crípticas no jornal The Observer. É autor dos livros Crosswords for Riper Years (1925) e The Torquemada Puzzle Book (1934), uma compilação de palavras cruzadas, quebra-cabeças e anagramas, cujas cem últimas páginas constituem o puzzle A Mandíbula de Caim. O livro viria a ser reeditado em 2019 por uma pequena editora britânica, a Unbound.
