Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) é considerado um dos mais importantes escritores norte-americanos.
Ensaísta, poeta, naturalista, investigador, historiador, filósofo e transcendentalista, é autor de inúmeros ensaios, entre os quais Desobediência Civil. O seu pensamento inspirou grandes nomes que mudaram a sociedade, como Gandhi, Tolstói ou Martin Luther King, Jr., a quem devemos um mundo mais justo e mais livre do que aquele em que viveu o autor.
Considerado também um dos pioneiros do movimento ecologista, sempre defendeu o contacto com a Natureza, que advoga neste clássico intemporal A Arte de Andar a Pé.
