Thomas Kistner nasceu em 1958. É redator do jornal Süddeutsche Zeitung e responsável pela área desportiva. Foi distinguido, e entre outros prémios, com o prémio Theodor Wolff, em 2006, para «jornalista desportivo do ano» na Alemanha. É reconhecido internacionalmente como um dos jornalistas de maior nomeada na análise e investigação no âmbito desportivo e da face menos conhecida do desporto. Na Alemanha, Kistner é convidado regularmente para fazer comentários e falar em talk shows em televisão e rádio, onde aborda temas polémicos como a corrupção e o doping no futebol.
