Osamu Tezuka nasceu a 3 de novembro de 1928, na cidade de Toyonaka, Osaka. Era um rapaz extremamente espirituoso e imaginativo, tendo crescido numa família liberal exposta à manga e à animação.
Em criança também tinha um amor por insetos, de tal forma que refletiu este seu gosto ao incorporar o ideograma para «inseto» no seu pseudónimo.
Estudou medicina, mas acabou por escolher a profissão que mais amava: artista de manga e escritor de filmes de animação.
