Tessa Hadley nasceu em 1956, em Bristol, no Reino Unido. É autora de aclamados romances, entre eles The London Train, Clever Girl e O Passado, este editado em Portugal pela Cultura. As suas histórias são publicadas pela The New Yorker. Hadley foi distinguida com os prestigiados Windham Campbell Prize, um dos mais valiosos prémios literários do mundo, e Hawthornden Prize, atribuído a autores britânicos ou irlandeses que demonstrem extraordinária imaginação literária.
