Tessa de Loo nasceu em Bussum, na Holanda, em 1946 e actualmente vive no Algarve. Licenciada em Estudos Neerlandeses, foi professora durante vários anos, antes de se estrear na literatura com um livro de contos, que viria a ganhar dois prémios. Considerada «uma das mais brilhantes romancistas europeias» pela Kirkus Reviews, a autora conheceu um enorme êxito comercial e junto da crítica com As Gémeas, traduzido para 22 línguas e que deu origem a um filme homónimo nomeado para o Óscar de Melhor Filme Estrangeiro.
