O autor japonês Takashi Murakami, apaixonado por cães, conseguiu ser aclamado pela crítica em todos os países em que foi lançado O Cão que Guarda as Estrelas, por ser uma obra que trata com muita sensibilidade a próxima relação entre cachorros e seres humanos.
No Japão foi eleito o Livro do Ano pelo respeitado prêmio Da Vinci, além de ganhar também nas categorias Livro para chorar e Livro eleito pelos leitores.
Nos Estados Unidos, o Stargazing Dog foi destacado como um dos dez melhores romances gráficos pela American Library  Association.
