Susana de Noronha
Susana de Noronha is an anthropologist and researcher at the Centre for Social Studies (CES), with a PhD in sociology with distinction and honors from the University of Coimbra. She is the author of the award-winning book The Ink, the Butterfly and the Metastasis: art as experience, knowledge and action on breast cancer, published in 2009 by Edições Afrontamento. Her second book, Objects Made of Cancer: women, material culture and disease in art stories, from 2015, is published by Edições Almedina. She pioneered studies on the art and material culture of oncological disease in Portugal, her field of work since 2005. In 2007 she was awarded the "CES Prize for Young Social Scientists of Portuguese-Speaking Countries" and in 2003 the "Bernardino Machado Prize" in Anthropology for the best undergraduate student at the University of Coimbra. As a writer, she is also a lyricist, with work published on three albums, one EP and three compilations of Portuguese music.
