Desempenhou altos cargos na Administração Imperial no tempo dos Imperadores Trajano e Adriano, destacando-se como uma das personalidades mais prestigiadas do seu tempo. No entanto, era na escrita que residia a sua grande paixão. Autor de numerosos trabalhos e publicações, conquistou a imortalidade como biógrafo das mais importantes personalidades do Império Romano: os Césares.
