Steve Sem-Sandberg nasceu em Oslo, Suécia, em 1958. Divide o seu tempo entre Viena e Estocolmo. Além de escritor premiado, é crítico literário e tradutor.
Publicado na Suécia em 2009, após ter sido considerado o acontecimento literário da Feira de Frankfurt de 2010, O Imperador das Mentiras tornou-se um sucesso internacional e foi o grande vencedor do Prémio August-Strindberg (o equivalente sueco do prémios Goncourt e Booker).
Partindo de uma escrita sóbria pontuada por puros momentos de poesia, umas vezes vaga de fundo dominando os acontecimentos de 1942, outras, melodia vibrante de emoções, Sem-Sandberg aposta, obviamente, na literatura.
