Steve Patschke é um bibliotecário reformado de uma escola primária que se divertiu imenso a ensinar e a apresentar histórias fantásticas às crianças durante mais de trinta anos. Vive com a sua família perto de Woodstock, Nova Iorque, na solarenga Florida. Adora mascarar-se para o Halloween e ler os seus livros de Halloween para crianças de todas as idades. Por vezes, quando lê, leva consigo o seu gato preto "Max". O Max é preto como azeviche, com grandes olhos amarelos e parece um gato de Halloween. Ele dorme a sesta, toma um banho e depois ouve enquanto o Steve lê todas as histórias assustadoras que escreveu.
