Joaquim Soeiro Pereira Gomes (Baião, 1909 – Lisboa, 1949) estudou em Espinho e Coimbra (onde tirou o curso de regente agrícola) e trabalhou em Angola. Fixou-se em Alhandra e, a partir de 1939, começa a escrever no semanário oposicionista O Diabo. Tendo aderido ao PCP em 1937, passou à clandestinidade em 1944, sendo eleito para o Comité Central em 1946. Além de Esteiros (cujo desenho da capa da primeira edição é de Álvaro Cunhal), na sua bibliografia há ainda outro romance, Engrenagem (publicação póstuma em 1951), bem como recolhas de contos (Contos Vermelhos ou Refúgio Perdido e Outros Contos) e de crónicas. A sua correspondência com a mulher, Manuela Câncio dos Reis, está publicada no livro Eles Vieram de Madrugada (1981).
