Simply Red
Simply Red is a British band formed in 1984 in Manchester, led by Mick Hucknall, the only constant member of the group over the years. The band is known for its fusion of pop, soul, jazz, and rhythm and blues, which allowed them to achieve great success in the 1980s and 1990s.
The band's debut album, Picture Book (1985), brought them notoriety with the single "Holding Back the Years", which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. Another hit single from this album was "Money's Too Tight (to Mention)", which became popular internationally.
Over the years, Simply Red continued to release albums that became critical and commercial successes, such as Men and Women (1987), A New Flame (1989), and Stars (1991). The latter was particularly successful, being the best-selling album in the UK in 1991 and 1992, with popular singles such as "Something Got Me Started" and the title track "Stars".
The band is recognized for Mick Hucknall's distinctive voice, which combines vocal power with an emotive and deep delivery. Simply Red has sold over 50 million albums worldwide, cementing itself as one of the most successful British bands of its generation.
Despite several lineup changes over the years, Hucknall remained the creative core of the group. In 2010, Simply Red announced a break after a 25-year career, but returned in 2015 with the album Big Love, which was well received by both critics and audiences, maintaining the band's characteristic style.
Simply Red remains an iconic band, with a dedicated fan base and a musical heritage spanning several decades of international success.
