Sarah Bakewell (1963) nasceu em Bournemouth e vive em Londres. Com a família (é filha de um livreiro e de uma bibliotecária), viveu na Índia e na Austrália; regressada a Inglaterra, fez um doutoramento sobre Heidegger. O seu primeiro emprego foi numa fábrica de chá, antes de se tornar bibliotecária e especialista em livros antigos. Escreveu At the Existentialist Café (sobre a importância da filosofia) ou The English Dane (sobre um aventureiro inglês na Islândia). Ensina na City University de Londres e dirige a catalogação de livros no National Trust.
