Robert Menasse nasceu em 1954, em Viena, onde vive. Estudou língua e literatura alemã, filosofia e ciência política em Viena, Salzburgo e Messina, e é um dos escritores mais importantes e conhecidos da literatura austríaca contemporânea. Com mais de uma dúzia de livros publicados, entre ensaios, romances e contos, encontra-se traduzido em mais de 25 línguas. A Capital, o seu grande romance europeu, foi vencedor do Prémio Livro Alemão 2007, tendo sido entusiasticamente aplaudido pela crítica e pelos leitores.
