ROBERT M. PIRSIG nasceu a 16 de Setembro de 1928 em Minneapolis, Minnesota. Formou-se em Química, Filosofia e Jornalismo e estudou o pensamento oriental na Universidade Hindu de Benares, Índia, após ser servido no exército, na Coreia. Zen e a Arte de Manutenção de Motocicletas distinguiu-se também por ter entrado para o Guinness, depois de ter si recusado por 121 editoras - uma vez publicado vendeu 5 milhões de exemplares e foi objecto de intenso interesse tanto da parte da crítica como do público. Esta nova edição, passados mais de 25 anos, inclui uma nova introdução do autor, um «Guia do Leitor», correspondência, entrevistas além de uma significativa actualização tipográfica.
