Richard Montanari nasceu em Cleveland, no seio de uma família ítalo-americana. Após terminar uma licenciatura na Universidade de Case Western Reserve, decidiu partir à descoberta da Europa. Mais tarde, depois de regressar aos Estados Unidos, tornou-se escritor freelancer. Conheceu o sucesso em 2005 com a publicação deste livro. Além de romancista, é ainda argumentista e ensaísta, tendo colaborado com o Chicago Tribune e o Seattle Times.
