Nasceu em Hong-Kong e cresceu entre a sua cidade natal e Xangai. Formou-se em Química na London University, doutorou-se na Yale University e fez o pós-doutoramento na Washington University. É professor do Departamento de Química do Williams College desde 1968.
É membro do American Chemical Society Examination Committee, do National Chemistry Olympiad, do Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Committee e editor do The Chemical Educator. É autor de livros sobre físico-química, química industrial e ciências físicas.
