Raul Pompeia

Raul Pompeia was born on April 12, 1863, in Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro. At the age of 11, he entered a boarding school, Colégio Abílio, in Rio de Janeiro. Later, he studied Law at Largo de São Francisco, in the Faculty of Law of São Paulo. During his years at law school, he became an abolitionist and republican. He chose not to practice law after graduation. Subsequently, he began a career in journalism, in addition to being a professor at the School of Fine Arts and director of the National Library. It was then that he became a supporter of the authoritarian ruler Floriano Peixoto, which clashed with some of the country's leading intellectuals. He participated in movements in favor of the abolition of slavery and also for the end of the monarchy and the establishment of the Republic. However, due to his controversial and often inflexible positions, he suffered political persecution, which ultimately led to his failing grades at university. On December 25, 1895, in Rio de Janeiro, the author committed suicide at the age of thirty-two. He is now considered one of the main representatives of Realism and Naturalism and one of the great writers of the 19th century in Brazilian literature.
